I figured I'd mention this because I wish I had known.
When you right-click the drill in your inventory it creates a tool on the ground that you can pick up and use (replacing your actionbar). If you pick it up you have a certain timelimit before it breaks (5 minutes maybe). BUT if you pick up the tool you CANNOT drop it or it will disappear.
My way: damage the iceblock until you can't see the red in the health bar. Unequip all your gear and punch it 30-40 times. Use the drill and only use the first "setting"!
